Rockets center Yao Ming had surgery yesterday in Houston to repair a broken bone in his left foot.

The team announced the surgery was performed at Memorial Hermann Hospital by Dr. Tom Clanton, the Rockets' team physician, along with Dr. Bill McGarvey.

Surgeons grafted bone onto the tarsal navicular bone and realigned his foot to reduce stress on the repair. The seven-time All-Star is slated to remain in the hospital for several days.

"Everything went according to play, and we were able to achieve not only fixation of the broken bone but also realignment of the bones to improve the stress pattern on his foot," Clanton said in a statement. "We expect him to be immobilized in a cast and using crutches for at least 6-8 weeks."

Yao is expected to miss the 2009-10 season, but be ready to go for training camp in 2010.

Yao suffered the hairline fracture late in a May 8 playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Rockets said late last month that the injury had not healed and he was out indefinitely. Last Friday, the 7-foot-6 center announced that he'd have the surgery.

Yao is due to make more than $16 million next season, with a player option for 2010-11 that would pay him more than $17 million.

Grizzlies: Former Memphis Grizzlies and University of Memphis point guard Antonio Burks remains in critical condition a day after being shot during a robbery. Burks underwent surgery Monday night after he was shot in the lower torso. The Commercial Appeal quoted police as saying Burks and four other men were in the backyard of a Memphis house when they were robbed by three men. They shot Burks and another man, whose identity was not released. Police said the second victim also was in critical condition.

Magic: Well-traveled free-agent forward Matt Barnes has agreed to a two-year contract with Orlando. Barnes' agent, Aaron Goodwin, who also represents Magic All-Star center Dwight Howard, confirmed the deal in an e-mail Monday, but declined to disclose financial terms. The Magic said they had nothing to announce yet. The 6-foot-7 Barnes averaged a career-high 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game in 77 games last season for the Phoenix Suns.

Kings: Free-agent forward Sean May agreed in principle to a one-year contract with Sacramento. The Kings announced the agreement but did not disclose terms of the contract. May became a free agent when Charlotte declined to make him a one-year qualifying offer of $3.7 million last month. May had appeared in only 82 of a possible 328 games since being picked 13th in the 2005 draft because of a lingering knee injury and conditioning problems.

76ers: Philadelphia has signed guard Jrue Holiday, its first-round draft pick. Holiday, 6 feet 3, 180 pounds, was the 17th overall pick in the draft and was an early-entry candidate out of UCLA following his freshman season.
