Former UH standout Allen to hold volleyball clinics

    Former University of Hawai'i volleyball player Allen Allen will hold two volleyball clinics tomorrow at Campbell High School.

    A skills clinic will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. An advanced hitting clinic will follow from 7 to 9 p.m. Each clinic is $25 and open to players age 12 to 18. A shirt is also available for $10.

    Waiver forms required and available at http://get.simplyfit4life.org. Registration will also be held prior to the clinic at 4:30 p.m.

    'RACKET UP, AMERICA!' OFFERS $1 MILLION PRIZE

    "Racket Up, America!" is a new promotion by the tennis industry that offers anyone who buys a new tennis racket — any brand, at any tennis retailer or pro shop— through Sept. 30 a chance to serve for a $1 million grand prize, along with a trip for two to the finals of the 2010 U.S. Open.

    The promotion is designed to drive consumer awareness of tennis while helping to stimulate retail sales. The serve for $1 million will take place at the BNP Paribas Showdown in New York's Madison Square Garden on March 1, during Tennis Night in America.

    Consumers can register their racket purchase at www.playtennis.com/million, with other prizes also available. CM Bidwell tennis event set for Aug. 7 to 9

    The 21st annual CM Bidwell & Associates Pilot Foundation of Hawai'i Tennis Tournament will be Aug. 7 to 9 at the CORP Tennis Complex in Waipahu. The tournament helps the Hawai'i Chapter with its mission to "enrich the lives of the disadvantaged and disabled."

    The tournament is open to women and men with 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 rankings, with competition in singles and doubles. The cost is $26 per player for singles and $36 per team for doubles.

    BOXING: An amateur boxing event will be held tomorrow at Palolo District Park gym. Bouts — 17 are scheduled — begin at 6 p.m. Tickets, available at the door, are $10. Boxers from O'ahu, the Big Island and Kaua'i will compete.

    FENCING: Major William T. Miller, the current Hawai'i State Fencing champion, placed 30th out of 121 competitors at the United States Fencing Association's Summer Nationals at Grapevine, Texas earlier this month.

    ALS: Local athlete Vi Jones-Medusky will spearhead an event to help raise awareness about ALS Sept. 20 at Kualoa Ranch. The wheelchair-bound Jones-Medusky, a long-time triathlete, will tackle a four-mile loop. All net proceeds will be donated to the MDA ALS division.
