Molokaçi pump fixed; water flows anew

Advertiser Staff

After more than a week of restricted water usage among Molokaçi residents, repairs to the Kualapuu well have been completed and water is flowing again to the 1 million-gallon Kaunakakai holding tank.

Maui County officials announced the completion of the work this afternoon.
The county temporarily used a well belonging to the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to fill the Kaunakakai holding tank while repairs to its own well were completed.
Molokaçi crews from the Department of Water Supply and Department of Public Works, along with crews flown in from Maui’s Water Department and the contractor, Beylik Drilling and Pumping Inc., worked for nine days straight to help their community avoid a potentially disastrous situation, Maui County officials said.
Since July 17, residents and businesses were asked to severely limit non-essential water use so as to not diminish the limited amount of water in the holding tank.
Water in the Kaunakakai tank supplies Molokai General Hospital and the dialysis center. Water from the holding tank also fills fire hydrants in Kaunakakai and Kalae.
Most of Molokaçi’s 28 dialysis patients were temporarily relocated off island because of the risk of not having water required to run dialysis treatment equipment. All patients have since returned to Molokaçi, county officials said.
