Water polo: Canada beats Hungary; Russia, Greece advance

ROME — Brittany Hayes scored three goals to lead the United States to a 9-6 victory against Spain on Monday in the quarterfinals of the women’s water polo at the world championship.
Heather Petrie scored twice and the Americans limited Spain to 12 shots.
The U.S. advanced to the semifinals against Greece, which defeated Australia 4-3 behind four goals by Angeliki Gerolimou.
Dominique Perreault scored three goals to lead Canada past Hungary 9-7. The Canadians advanced to face Russia, which defeated the Netherlands 9-7. The Russian got two goals apiece from Natalia Ryzhova-Alenicheva, Evgenia Soboleva and Evgenia Ivanova.
