MLB: Tigers' Zumaya to have season-ending surgery
Associated Press
DETROIT — Detroit Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya is scheduled to have season-ending shoulder surgery in August.
Zumaya, who has had shoulder problems since an offseason injury in late 2007, last pitched on July 18 against the New York Yankees. He was then placed on the 15-day disabled list. Zumaya was examined by Dr. James Andrews, and will have surgery to remove a bone shard from the stress fracture in his shoulder.
Tigers trainer Kevin Rand said earlier in the week that surgery would mean Zumaya would miss the remainder of the season.
The hard-throwing 24-year-old is 3-3 with a 4.94 ERA in 29 appearances this season. He has been on the disabled list in each of the last three seasons.
