MLB: Marlins get first baseman Nick Johnson from Nats

MIAMI — First baseman Nick Johnson has been traded from the Washington Nationals to the Florida Marlins.
The last-place Nationals got left-hander Aaron Thompson from Florida in a deal that was completed just before Friday’s 4 p.m. deadline for making trades without waivers.
Johnson gives the Marlins a patient hitter with pop who should boost their lineup.
The 30-year-old has been prone to injuries but has stayed healthy this season, batting .295 with six homers, 44 RBIs and a .408 on-base percentage in 98 games with Washington.
The cost-conscious Marlins are a surprise contender, entering Friday three games out of the NL wild-card lead.
A first-round draft pick in 2005, Thompson was 5-9 with a 4.11 ERA in 20 starts for Double-A Jacksonville this season.
