The Honolulu Board of Water Supply and Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden are hosting the 21st Annual Halawa Xeriscape Garden and Unthirsty Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
This event is an open house that includes free family-fun activities, a plant sale, and a chance to win a $20,000 extreme Xeriscape Garden makeover.
Activities include Xeriscape workshops and information, children’s games, garden planting for the keiki, and tours of the demonstration garden. They will also be giving out free mulch, if you bring your own container.
The plant sale will include a plethora of plants that require minimal water (unthirsty plants) from the Xeriscape Garden and a dozen local nurseries. All proceeds will go toward educational classes and programs at Halwa Xeriscape Garden.
Xeriscaping is a term that refers to conserving water through the landscape. Outdoor plants can take up to 50 percent of water-use, using this technique could help save 30 to 80 percent of water consumption by using turf instead of grass and plants that don’t need as much water.
Parking is restricted at the garden. Suggested parking is along Iwaena anda Iwaiwa streets, a free shuttle will be provided from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and will run along Iwaena St.
