Holualoa man killed in Big Island crash

Advertiser Staff

A 21-year-old Holualoa man died yesterday from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Route 190 at the 17-mile marker in North Kona, Big Island police officials said.

The victim was identified as John H. Tuhy of a Holualoa address.
Responding to a 2:37 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers and traffic investigators determined that the victim was operating a 2002 Dodge Neon four-door sedan and traveling north on Route 190 when he lost control of his car, which crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the road and overturned.
Tuhy was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:16 a.m.
Police said Tuhy was wearing his seat belt. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor in the crash, investigators said.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner's inquest case and have ordered an autopsy.
Police ask anyone with information about this crash to call Officer Thomas Koyanagi at 808-326-4646, ext. 229.
Tuhy’s death was the ninth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 11 at the same time last year.
