After two seasons at catcher, Pearl City senior Carlton Tanabe was already one of the state's best as far as receiving, fielding and throwing.

This year, Tanabe was just as much a force with his bat in helping the Chargers go 12-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association regular season.

League coaches named him Western Division Player of the Year after a recent vote.

Tanabe, batting third in the lineup, showed early that he would be a big threat at the plate. In the season's opening doubleheader, he went 2 for 4 with a double and four RBIs in the first game against Mililani and then went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs in the nightcap.

Against Wai'anae, Tanabe slammed a three-run homer in the first game and went 2 for 4 with a double, triple and two RBIs in the second game.

Tanabe is joined on the West's all-star first team by five other Chargers: second baseman Kyle Kobayashi, shortstop Chace Numata, pitcher Kahana Neal and outfielders Bronson Oda and Jordan Oshiro.

Campbell was represented by outfielder Allyn Oliva-Respicio, pitcher Charles Ka'alekahi and utility player Keanu Kapana.

'Aiea placed third baseman Kamalu Kamoku and designated hitter Kainoa Ah Sing-Ka'ahanui. Wai'anae first baseman Kalei Hensley rounds out the first team.

Pearl City's Gary Nakamoto repeated as Coach of the Year.
