Red Cross holds free summer swimming classes

The American Red Cross Hawaiçi State Chapter will hold its annual summersSwim program for children and adults at Ala Moana Beach starting tomorrow.

The swimming lessons will be held on the Magic Island side of the showers and lifeguard station 1E. The adult swim classes are held from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday starting this past Tuesday through June 25 for anyone 14 and older. The children's swim classes are at 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Saturdays starting tomorrow through June 26.

As second round of classes will be held starting July 7-30 for adults and July 11-Aug. 1 for children ages three to 14.
The Red Cross also is seeking volunteers to help run the program. To volunteer call the Red Cross at 739-8179.
The summer swimming program is part of the Red Cross mission to save lives. It has been running the program for the past 45 years at Ala Moana Beach Park. On average 50 people in Hawaii drown and 150 nearly drown every year. Drowning is the second leading cause of death among children from birth to 17 years of age.
