Protest rally planned tomorrow over plan to hike parking fees in Waikiki
A protest rally is planned tomorrow over a plan to increase parking rates at the Honolulu Zoo parking lot and along Kalakaua Avenue fronting Kapiolani Park.
Protesters are meeting at 3 p.m. at Dillingham Fountain at Kapiolani Park. Volunteers are meeting at 1 p.m. and are encouraged to bring homemade signs.
The efforts focus on gaining testimony when the full City Council meets on Wednesday for a final vote on the budget.
Yesterday, City Council budget chairman Nestor Garcia proposed that zoo parking go up to $1 an hour and Kalakaua parking go up to 75 cents an hour, up from the existing 25 cents an hour. An earlier plan called for raising the rate to $1.50 an hour in both areas.
