EVERYBODY BON DANCE!

The island's first obon event of the season happens Saturday at Hawaii's Plantation Village in Waipahu.

The event kicks off the annual obon season, a Buddhist summertime ritual that honors ancestral spirits with dancing and merrymaking.

Obon celebrations are marked by numerous paper lanterns glowing in the dusky evening light that are said to help guide the spirits to the gathering where they join the party and celebrate among the living.

The event kicks off with a blessing by the Rev. Jay Okamoto of Waipahu Hongwanji.

Obon Celebration / 6-10 p.m. Saturday / Hawaii's Plantation Village, 94-695 Waipahu St., Waipahu / Free

TAILGATE AND POLO

It's polo season. (Who knew, right?) Swim at a private beach, watch a polo match and tailgate with the Hawaii Polo Club at 2 p.m. Sunday in Mokule'ia ($8, hawaii polo.com).

THE 'E.N.D.' IS IN SIGHT

Go ahead and mourn the loss of the real Black Eyed Peas — the underground hip-hop outfit that didn't include Fergie — but we dare you not to dance when "Boom Boom Pow" is playing. The new BEP album, "The E.N.D.," drops Tuesday.

STAY COOL

Pardon us for stating the obvious, but it's HOT! Get some relief at Ice Palace (487-9921). The skating rink's summer schedule starts Monday. Skate longer for the same price ($8.75, skate rentals included). Can't skate? Just hang out, and stay cool.

LAUGH TILL YOUR HEAD HURTS

"The Hangover," a new comedy with that funny obnoxious guy from "The Office" who's not Dwight and a funny guy with a beard, opens today. We're crossing our fingers that it'll be as hilarious as it looks, plus some.

IONA RETURNS

IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre returns to the stage — or in this case, the lawn — with its new production titled "The Living Earth." IONA performs tonight at the Hawai'i State Art Museum's First Friday event, Live from the Lawn (6-9 p.m., free, 586-0300).
