Officer's 2 weapons stolen

Honolulu police yesterday were searching for the person or persons who broke into a police officer's car in Kailua and stole the officer's two weapons and ammunition.

The off-duty officer's subsidized vehicle was in a parking garage on Aulike Street when someone broke into it between 2 and 3 p.m. yesterday. Maj. Frank Fujii, HPD spokesman, said the items taken included the officer's department-issued handgun, rifle, ammunition, holster and identification card.

The officer's name was not disclosed.

Police issued an all-points bulletin soon after the break-in. Police did not have a description of the person or persons involved in the case as of yesterday afternoon.

Fujii said the department has a policy on how officers are to secure weapons when they are off duty. But he said he did not know where the stolen items were at the time of the break-in.

"Generally, we're supposed to have our badge, ID card and weapon accessible," Fujii said of the policy. "The spirit of it is they want us to have it accessible so that we can act in times of emergency."

Fujii said the main concern is that two weapons were stolen and are out in the community.

"To police officers, our badges and our firearms we cherish. We go to all the extremes we can to safeguard them, and anytime anybody's firearms are stolen is a concern to us," he said. "We don't take safeguarding our badges and our guns lightly because we know the ramifications of having them stolen."

Three years ago, an off-duty officer's car was broken into after it stalled near the Honouliuli sewage treatment plant in 'Ewa. In that case, the officer's handgun, badge, uniform, gun belt, hand-held radio, handcuffs and other items were stolen.

Police recovered most of the items and arrested three people in connection with the case.

Yesterday's incident is under investigation. Anyone with information about this case should call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
