Waialua softball pitcher Marissa Keao and coach/father Jay Keao repeated with top postseason honors in the OIA White Conference, but this time it follows an even sweeter reward:
The school's first softball championship.
Waialua won the White title with an 11-1-1 record, and it was Marissa Keao — who again was named the conference's Player of the Year — leading the way.
She did it with her arm and her bat, pitching a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and going 3 for 5 with a triple against McKinley, and tossing a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and going 3 for 4 with a three-run homer and four RBIs vs. Kalaheo.
Keao is joined on the White all-star first team by three other Bulldogs: second baseman Althia Dicion, outfielder Cierra Balidoy and utility player Alyssia Hernandez.
Kalani placed three on the first team: shortstop Chelsea Yamamoto, outfielder Jaimie Higa and catcher Kristie Belshe. McKinley was represented by first baseman Ashlen Hanaoka and outfielder Tisha Higashi.
Radford third baseman Akalaina Baravilala, Kaiser pitcher Kayla Alcoran and Kalaheo designated player Noelani Maglinti round out the first team.
Jay Keao was named Co-Coach of the Year for guiding Waialua to the title just two years after the school did not even have enough players to field a team. He shares the honor with Kaiser's Dee Kahunahana, who guided the Cougars to a 12-1-1 runner-up finish.
