BOSTON — The last time the Red Sox beat New York six straight times to start the season, the Yankees were known as the Highlanders and it was the bandbox in Boston that was brand new.

Josh Beckett allowed only an infield hit in six innings, and David Ortiz hit his third homer of the year as the Red Sox beat the Yankees, 7-0, last night and improved to 6-0 against New York for the first time since 1912.

"They've taken it to us so far this year," said Yankees — and former Red Sox — outfielder Johnny Damon. "But we have 13 more, and hopefully we'll beat them sometime soon."

The Red Sox beat the New York Highlanders in 14 straight to start the 1912 season, including the first-ever game in Fenway Park. Fenway is now the oldest ballpark in the major leagues.

"You don't want to be 0-6 against your rival," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "But we are still tied for first place."

Beckett (7-2) noted that Alex Rodriguez was recovering from hip surgery for the first five losses, "so we'll start counting after that."

Beckett struck out eight and walked two before leaving with a 6-0 lead after six innings, having thrown 93 pitches in a steady drizzle. The only hit he allowed was Robinson Cano's fourth-inning grounder to the left of second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who slid to come up with the ball but couldn't make the throw.

A.J. Burnett (4-3) allowed three earned runs on five walks and five hits before leaving with two outs in the third. He gave up Ortiz's two-run shot to straightaway center field in Boston's four-run second.

ANGELS 4, RAYS 3:

Jered Weaver (6-2) allowed two runs and five hits over six innings to win his third straight start and Bobby Abreu double home Chone Figgins for a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh as Los Angeles beat Tampa Bay.

INDIANS 8, ROYALS 4:

Mark DeRosa's grand slam off reliever Jamey Wright in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled Cleveland over Kansas City and out of last place in the Central Division. It was DeRosa's fifth of his career.

ORIOLES 3, MARINERS 1:

Rookie Brad Bergesen (3-1) scattered five hits over eight innings, George Sherrill earned his 12th save, and Nolan Reimold homered and had two RBIs as host Baltimore ended a five-game losing streak.

BLUE JAYS 9, RANGERS 0:

Brian Tallet (4-3) scattered two hits over seven innings, relievers Dirk Hayhurst and B.J. Ryan completed the two-hitter, and Adam Lind homered for the second straight game to lead visiting Toronto past Texas.

TIGERS 7, WHITE SOX 6:

Miguel Cabrera broke out of an 0 for 12 slump with a homer to lead off the top of the 10th inning as Detroit beat Chicago after squandering a three-run lead in the ninth as closer Fernando Rodney blew his first save.
