Four more players with Hawaii ties taken in baseball draft

 • 6 with local ties drafted

Outfielder Nick Freitas, a 2005 graduate of Kamehameha, was picked in the 33rd round by the Minnesota Twins today, on the third and final day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
A total of 10 players with Hawai‘i ties, including four today, were taken in the 50-round draft.

Freitas, the 1,002nd overall selection out of Southern Utah, was an all-Summit League first-team selection this past season. He hit .347 with a team-leading 14 home runs, 60 RBI and 14 steals.
Hawai‘i recruit Nick Struck, a right-handed pitcher at Mount Hood JC in Oregon, was picked in the 39th round, the 1,190th overall pick, by the Chicago Cubs.
Struck was 9-0 with a 1.17 ERA with 56 strikeouts to 11 walks in 54 innings this past season.
Recent Kapolei High graduate Kalani Brackenridge, a shortstop, was picked in the 44th round by the Tampa Bay Rays, the 1,339th overall selection.
Brackenridge has already signed a letter of intent to play football for the University of Hawaii. His father, Lyle Brackenridge, played pro baseball and his half-brother, Tyron, is a cornerback for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Outfielder Kaohi Downing, a 2005 graduate of Punahou, was picked in the 50th round (4,497th overall) by the San Francisco Giants out of NAIA Point Loma Nazarene.
Downing was a Gold Glove award winner as a junior.
The draft ended with 1,521 players selected.
