100 new swine flu cases reported

One hundred new cases of swine flu in Hawai'i were confirmed in the past week, bringing the state's total to 298, the state Department of Health said yesterday.

The weekly breakdown shows 98 new cases on O'ahu, bringing O'ahu's total to 288.

Kaua'i and Maui each reported one new case and have three cases each.

There were no new cases on the Big Island, which had confirmed four cases.

The first cases of swine flu in Hawai'i were confirmed May 5. To date, the Department of Health has investigated and conducted case follow-up for more than 1,350 people tested for swine flu.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said more than 17,800 confirmed and probable cases have been identified across the country.

Forty-four U.S. residents have died from the illness.
