Three former champions and a couple of 14-year-olds are among those who advanced to the third round of the 101st Manoa Cup yesterday at Oahu Country Club.
Defending champion Alex Ching, who just finished his freshman year at University of San Diego, and 2007 champion Kurt Nino, who just finished his collegiate career at San Francisco, will meet today at 7 a.m. after winning by 4-and-3 scores in yesterday's second round. Ching beat Craig Watanabe, and Nino ousted Bou-An Fujieki.
Ryan Perez, the 2004 Manoa Cup champion, also reached the third round. He held on for a 1-up victory over Donny Hopoi, who just finished sixth grade.
There are a pair of 14-year-olds on Perez's side of the bracket. Punahou's Kalena Preus won yesterday by a 6-and-5 margin and Campbell's Rudy Cabalar advanced with a 1-up victory over Thomas Yamashita.
Preus will play Moanalua High School junior David Saka, who finished second at the Kona Open last month. Cabalar will take on Christopher Armanini, who defeated Christian Akau, Monday's medalist, 2 and 1.
In other Round of 16 matches today, Bradley Yosaitis plays TJ Kua, Perez takes on Samuel Rodriguez III, Marc Rosen meets Scott Ichimura, Robert Szymaszek plays Doug Williams and Alika Bell meets Layne Morita.
Today's winners advance to quarterfinals and semifinals tomorrow, beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday's final, scheduled for 36 holes, also begins at 7 a.m.
