Advertiser Staff
Pearl City High School senior Daniel Tanigawa is the winner of the 2009 Monte Ito Memorial Scholarship. Tanigawa, planning to attend the University of Hawai'i, earns a $1,500 college scholarship.
The program honors the late Monte Ito, an Advertiser sportswriter for 50 years who is also in the Hawai'i Golf Hall of Fame. It recognizes "outstanding achievements or potential in journalism and golf."
Tanigawa played on the Chargers' baseball and golf teams and ran cross country. He was sports editor of the school paper his junior and senior years. Tanigawa also graduated summa cum laude and served as a class officer all four years.
The scholarship program started in 2000 and is administered by the David S. Ishii Foundation, which was formed in 2000 to "promote and advance the game of golf, and to educate the public as to its benefits to society."
