Service aids 112 vehicles in 2 days

The state's new Freeway Service Patrol responded to 112 disabled vehicles in its first two days, according to the Department of Transportation.

The free roadside assistance program, which began Wednesday, consists of six patrolling tow trucks that drive the busiest parts of H-1 and Moanalua freeways on weekdays during the hours of heaviest traffic.

Many of the responses in two days — 37 of them — fell under a miscellaneous category, which included problems ranging from abandoned vehicles to waiting with a disabled vehicle for additional assistance.

Fleet manager Conrad Nakoa said the trucks pull over anytime they see a car on the side of the road. Sometimes that turns out to be a teenage couple talking or tourists flagging them down for directions. But false alarms like these haven't been getting in the patrol's way, he said.

The second most common use of the patrol, at 28 responses, was to tow vehicles to drop locations.

The patrol also changed 18 flat tires and responded to 10 accidents, seven overheated engines, five fuel fills, five debris cleanups and two battery jump-starts. The majority of responses occurred after patrollers came upon disabled vehicles and not from drivers' calls, Nakoa said.

"They'll work on a break-down, and then there will be another one right down the road," he said.
