An elderly man died this afternoon of an apparent drowning near the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki.
City paramedics were called to the area fronting the hotel at about 11:30 a.m. When the ambulance crew arrived, lifeguards were already performing CPR on the victim.
The man, who appeared to be in his 70s, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but he later died, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman with the city Emergency Services Department.
