Hannemann allows city budget to become law

Advertiser Staff

Mayor Mufi Hannemann today allowed the $1.8 billion operating budget for 2010 to become law without his signature.

Hannemann’s action sets into motion a series of tax and fee hikes, from property taxes to bus fares and vehicle registration fees.
Hannemann said he was still unhappy that the City Council chose not offer tax credits for owner-occupants as he had proposed.
He renewed a call for the council to adopt a bill creating a separate homeowners’ classification so that owner-occupants can receive a tax rate separate from that of other residential property owners.
Council leaders, in response, said they are open to the discussion.
