Jisoo Park of South Korea eliminated top seed Stephanie Kono of Hawai'i, 1 up, yesterday in the third round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass.

Hilo native Kimberly Kim rallied to defeat Sara-Maude Juneau of Canada, 2 and 1, to advance to today's quarterfinals.

Kono, a Punahou alum and UCLA sophomore who was the stroke-play medalist, built a 2-up lead against Park through 13 holes. But Park won the next three holes, including a birdie on the par-4 No. 16 to take a 1-up lead. The golfers halved the final two holes.

Kim went 2-up after two holes, but Juneau came back and tied the match, winning the par-4 No. 9 with a birdie. She also won the next two holes to go 2-up. But Kim won the par-4 No. 13 with a birdie and eagled the par-4 No. 14 to square the match. Kim closed it out by winning Nos. 16 and 17, both par 4s.

Kim faces Sun Gyoung Park of Vail, Ariz., who defeated Kristen Schelling of Mesa, Ariz., 5 and 4.

The quarterfinals and semifinals are today. The 36-hole final is tomorrow.

WIE FIVE BACK AT 69

Honolulu's Michelle Wie birdied four of her last six holes for a 3-under-par 69 and was five shots behind the clubhouse leader when play was suspended yesterday in the opening round of the Wegman's LPGA at Locust Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.

Sandra Gal was the clubhouse leader after a 64 when play was suspended because of darkness with 30 players unable to finish. The round was delayed for nearly three hours because of inclement weather.

Starting on the back nine, Wie, a Punahou alum and Stanford sophomore, birdied the par-4 No. 10, but bogeyed the par-5 No. 11. She made the turn at 1 over when she bogeyed the par-4 No. 18.

Wie opened with three consecutive pars on the front nine before getting birdies on the par-5 No. 4 and par-4 No. 6. She finished with birdies on the par-5 No. 8 and par-3 No. 9.

The $2 million tournament drew 18 of the season's top 20 money winners, including No. 1 Cristie Kerr, who shot 75. Absent is Lorena Ochoa, the world's top-ranked player, and Suzann Pettersen, who was runner-up here last June.

PERRY OPENS WITH 61

Kenny Perry shot a 9-under 61 to tie the course record and take a two-shot lead after the first round of the Travelers Championship yesterday at Cromwell, Conn.

Perry, who has finished in the top-10 seven times at this tournament, shot a 29 on the front nine, and had no bogeys. He flirted with a 59, before making par on the final two holes.

"I was looking for that magical number," Perry said. "I thought I could do it today. I was definitely trying to get it done."

More than 100 golfers shot under par at the TPC River Highlands, taking advantage of light winds and the soft greens left by the rains that hit the U.S. Open.
