Disoriented hikers rescued from Kauai's 'Sleeping Giant'
WAILUA – Two 18-year-old Wailua men were rescued this afternoon on Nonou Mountain, known as “The Sleeping Giant.”
The men had been hiking when they slipped and fell off an unmarked trail and became disoriented. Neither required medical assistance, Kaua’i officials said.
The hikers called police on a cell phone around 3:55 pm. Dispatchers using the e911 system found the hikers’ coordinates, which enabled rescue specialists to use their cell phone to find the general location of the hikers, county officials said.
At around 4:30 pm, one of the men was spotted waving a white T-shirt. The fire department’s Air-1 helicopter made two trips to the mountain to rescue each hiker separately.
