Miss Hawaii USA turns ambassador for Island treat

Aureana Tseu, Miss Hawaii USA, will introduce Diamond Bakery's saloon pilot crackers this week in Hannaford stores in Portland, Maine. She'll promote the Island cracker as a suitable companion to New England chowder in a tour that includes New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York. "This is a major breakthrough for our company," says Diamond honcho Brent Kunimoto. "It marks the first time our products are being sold in retail stores beyond Hawai'i." ...

STARRY SIGHTS: When the Pussycat Dolls were staying at The Royal Hawaiian hotel, Melody Thornton, the group's second in vocal chores to Hawai'i native Nicole Scherzinger, stopped by the Panama hat shop Newt at the Royal and acquired a "Fun Hat," according to the shop's Jim Tomasi. Later at a publicity shoot in the Coconut Grove of the Royal, Thorton sported the stylish hat. The next "it" fashion accessory, perhaps? ...

Willie Nelson and Virginia Madsen helped turned Maui's Mala Wailea restaurant into a celebrity hotspot during the Maui Film Festival. Mala, at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, is Shep Gordon's endeavor with chef Mark Ellman — a popular destination. ...

So who among the Tihati Productions casts from six major shows statewide made the cut to perform at the White House lu'au last week? Led by Tihati co-founders Jack and Cha Thompson, soloists Afatia Thompson, Misty Tufono, Kale Chang; musicians Iele Eseroma, Kalamaku Koanui, Lloyd Chandler, Faamau Liu; and dancers Nicole Thompson, Shandell Yancey, Keao Crabbe, Pilialoha Gaison, Shannon Daliva, Lehua Beltrame, Anapogi Tevaga, T.C. Thompson, Micah Tiedemann and Howard Jeremiah. A thrill, for sure. ...

TALK ABOUT PEOPLE: Restaurateur Randy Schoch and wife Cheri, plus their kids Randall and Victoria, are summering in Honolulu in a rented Diamond Head-area home. We ran into Cheri at The Queen's Medical Center, where she was visiting pal Lisa Josephsohn (who is Schoch's Honolulu publicist for Romano's Macaroni Grill and Ruth's Chris Steak House). Randall, proficient in football, is a spitting image of his restaurateur dad. ...

WAIKIKI SEENS: Ciana Pelekai, 8, grand champ of the "Al Waterson and You" keiki singing competition at Don Ho's Island Grill, got a nice pop, singing "At Last" at a jazzfest this month, which featured Michael Paulo, Peter White and Philippe Saisse at the Royal Hawaiian Theatre. She's also on national commercials for "America's Got Talent," and is a budding star to watch. ...

By the way, Jimmy Buffett's at the Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel just launched what will be a monthly lunchtime showcase for winners in the Waterson concerts. One Saturday a month, winners will take the site's Don Ho stage from 1 to 3 p.m. With Haumea Ho, Ho's widow, doing promotional work for the restaurant, it's a nice way to continue Mr. Waikiki's mission of supporting budding talent. ...

SHOW BITS: In the spirit of Sunset on the Beach, the Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Walk will present an outdoor flick to kick off the Fourth of July weekend, with an 8 p.m. Friday screening of Tom Cruise's "Top Gun" at the resort's Grand Lanai, open to hotel guests and the public. Folks can jump onto red, white and blue inflatable rafts to watch from the pool, or from a chaise lounge (limited seating). Refreshments will be sold. ...

Boomer biz is big in the Pacific Northwest. Gail Ohashi (the former Gail Kiyama, a Kaimuki High grad), is producing "Fourth of July Boomer Blast Seattle 2009" this Saturday at the Doubletree Suites Seattle, with retro bands Russ Shiroma & The BeatBoys and Harvey Yamauchi & The King Pins providing the vibes. ...
