NEW YORK — This street does have a name — U2 Way.
To celebrate U2's weeklong gig on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman," a block-long stretch of West 53rd Street yesterday was temporarily renamed after the four veteran Irish rockers.
"Somewhere south of Duke Ellington Way and north of Joey Ramone Place we find ourselves," said lead singer Bono. "And we're the band where the streets have no name."
The band joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg in unveiling the street sign on a Broadway corner across from the Ed Sullivan Theater, where Letterman's show is taped.
"Edge (guitarist The Edge) just said this is the first time he's been seen with a street sign and not been arrested," Bono quipped.
U2 is performing on Letterman's show all week to promote its new album, "No Line on the Horizon." U2 will also play Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America" show.
Bloomberg, noting the humanitarian work of all four band members, called them "honorary New Yorkers."

LONDON — Michael Jackson plans to make a "special announcement" in London — expected to be confirmation of his first live concerts in years. British media said yesterday that the troubled King of Pop will announce a string of dates at the O2 Arena, where a press conference is set for tomorrow.
The days of multimillion-selling albums like "Thriller" are gone. Jackson has kept a low profile since he was acquitted of California child molestation charges in 2005. There have been reports of financial woes, legal troubles and health problems.
