Spring Football Capsules: Pac-10

Associated Press

What to watch for during spring practice around the Pac-10:

Arizona (8-5)

Practice started: March 3.

Spring game: April 4.

All eyes on: The Wildcats have an interesting duel to replace QB Willie Tuitama, who left school as the career leader in every significant statistical category. The top candidates are Matt Scott, a fleet sophomore who has attempted 11 passes in college, and Nick Foles, a redshirt sophomore who transferred from Michigan State. Arizona also is looking to rebuild the offensive line after standout LT Eben Britton left early for the NFL.

Arizona State (5-7)

Practice starts: March 24.

Spring game: April 18.

All eyes on: The Sun Devils have myriad problems on offense, but none bigger than finding a quarterback to succeed four-year starter Rudy Carpenter. Senior Danny Sullivan has the most experience but will be pressed by sophomore Samson Szakacsy, sophomore Chasen Stangel and new recruit Brock Osweiler, a 6-foot-8 freshman who once intended to play basketball for Gonzaga. The Sun Devils also are looking to establish a reliable running game and hope TB Ryan Bass will live up to the high-school hype.

California (9-4)

Practice starts: March 14.

Spring game: April 18.

All eyes on: Will coach Jeff Tedford finally be satisfied with QB Kevin Riley? The coach flip-flopped between Riley and Nate Longshore last season, eventually benching Riley in favor of the now-departed senior. Riley now must compete with Brock Mansion and newcomer Beau Sweeney this spring. With plenty of returning talent at most positions and TB Jahvid Best sitting out to recover from two postseason surgeries, Tedford and new offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig can devote plenty of time to dissecting Riley.

Oregon (10-3)

Practice starts: March 30.

Spring game: May 2.

All eyes on: Injuries at quarterback were problematic for the Ducks last season, but Jeremiah Masoli adjusted and emerged as the team's starter. Oregon's coaches will no doubt keep the competition open in the spring with backup Justin Roper, Nate Costa and Darron Thomas, but Masoli is the front-runner. And as for Oregon's coaches, it remains to be seen when Mike Bellotti will slip into the athletic director's chair and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly will take over as head coach.

Oregon State (9-4)

Practice starts: March 30.

Spring game: May 2.

All eyes on: Senior QB Lyle Moevao had surgery on his right shoulder and will not participate in spring drills. Backup Sean Canfield will take over at No. 1 this spring, and the Beavers will also look at redshirt freshman Ryan Katz, transfer Peter Lalich and sophomore Justin Engstrom. TB Jacquizz Rodgers and his older brother, wide receiver James Rodgers, missed games as the end of last season because of injuries. They will participate this spring, but will be held out of scrimmages.

Southern California (12-1)

Practice starts: March 28.

Spring game: April 25.

All eyes on: Who's the QB? Since Mark Sanchez left early for the NFL draft, there has figured to be a dogfight to replace him. Mitch Mustain, who transferred from Arkansas after going 8-0 in games he started as a Razorbacks freshman in 2006, would appear to have the inside track. He'll be challenged by Aaron Corp, Garrett Green and incoming freshman Matt Barkley.

Stanford (5-7)

Practice starts: Feb. 24.

Spring game: April 13.

All eyes on: Andrew Luck, the heralded recruit who redshirted his freshman year, will push returning starter Tavita Pritchard for the No. 1 quarterback spot. Pritchard had 13 interceptions and 10 touchdown passes last season as the Cardinal finished one win shy of making a bowl game for the first time since 2001. Coach Jim Harbaugh has raved about Luck, the son of former NFL quarterback Oliver Luck. Alex Loukas, the best runner of the three, will also get a chance to win the job.

UCLA (4-8)

Practice starts: April 2.

Spring game: April 25.

All eyes on: After injuries and inconsistency sunk the 2008 Bruins in coach Rick Neuheisel's first season, he will have had another year to put his imprint on the program. He hopes to raise UCLA football to the program across town — the Pete Carroll-coached, perennially powerful USC Trojans.

Washington (0-12)

Practice starts: March 31.

Spring game: April 25.

All eyes on: New coach Steve Sarkisian's first task this offseason was healing the psyche of a team that suffered the first winless season in school history and fired coach Tyrone Willingham. Sarkisian, in his first head coaching job, stumbled with a pair of secondary recruiting violations in January, but seems to have players, boosters and alumni genuinely excited about a turnaround in the near future. QB Jake Locker, fully recovered from a broken thumb, will be learning a new offense.

Washington State (2-11)

Practice Starts: March 26.

Spring game: April 25.

All eyes on: The Cougars ranked among the worst in the nation in both offense and defense last season as they set a school record for losses and allowed 43 points per game while scoring 12. The QB situation is open as Kevin Lopina and Marshall Lobbestael emerged from the wreckage as the top returnees, although Lobbestael's recent arrest for being drunk in public clouds the picture.
