Skiing: Legkow, Kowalczyk take World Cup freestyle races

LAHTI, Finland — Alexander Legkow of Russia dominated the men's 15-kilometer freestyle race and Justina Kowalczyk of Poland won the women's 10K today at a cross-country skiing World Cup meet.

Legkow secured his second World Cup victory by finishing in 33 minutes, 5.9 seconds to beat Italy's Pietro Piller Cottrer by 7.5 seconds. Austrian veteran Christian Hoffmann was third, 20.7 seconds back.

Kowalczyk, who won two gold medals at the worlds last month, finished the women's race in 24:38.6 to edge Sweden's Charlotte Kalla and Norwegian teenager Marthe Kristoffersen. Kalla was 22.4 seconds slower, with Kristoffersen 27.1 behind.

Norway's Petter Northug placed seventh to gain 14 points on World Cup leader Dario Cologna of Switzerland in the two-man race for the overall title. Cologna, who placed 12th, has 961 points to Northug's 872.

Kowalczyk moved past Aino-Kaisa Saarinen into second place in the overall standings. Petra Majdic of Slovenia, a sprint specialist who was 19th Sunday, has 1,362 points with Kowalczyk on 1,291.
