Exhibit unites artists from around Pacific

Hawai'i is often referred to as falling between the East and the West, and it's exactly that "between" creative director Rich Richardson focused on as he put together the "Pan Pacific Nation" exhibit at The ARTS at Marks Garage.
Pulling together 12 artists representing seven countries, the exhibit explores similarities and connections often overlooked because the Pacific islands are separated by vast expanses of ocean, culture, language and nationality, Richardson explains.
"The idea is to look at what connects the island nations instead of what separates us," he said. "It's a provocative look at what unites us in this region."
It's also an opportunity to exchange ideas and energy with artists who share geographical and genealogical similarities, evidenced by repeating patterns and themes, along with unique and vibrant use of color.
The artists include Nanette Lela'ulu, Maile Andrade, Lipelele Clayton, Noelle Kahanu, Leilani Kake, Lily Laita, Janet Lilo, Carl Pao, Siliga David Setoga, Ema Tavola, Angela Tiatia and Filipe Tohi.
The exhibit runs through March 28 at The ARTS at Marks Garage, 1159 Nu'uanu Ave. For details, call 521-2903.
