Maui police commission plans to name new chief May 20

Maui News

WAILUKU — The Maui Police Commission expects to publicly announce the new Maui County police chief at its regularly scheduled meeting May 20.

In a three-hour special meeting to address the chief's application and selection process yesterday, the commission decided that applications will be due on April 13, with interviews, follow-up interviews and decision-making to come between May 13 and 15.

The vacancy comes as Chief Tom Phillips announced last month that he will retire effective June 1. Phillips, 55, has spent almost 11 years as chief. He has more than 30 years with the department and was hired in 1976.

At its meeting in the chief's conference room at the Wailuku Police Station, commissioners also decided that ads for the job will begin to run on Friday. Ads will be placed in daily newspapers, including The Maui News, and notices also will be posted at the department.
