UH women hoops whip San Jose to advance in WAC tourney

Keisha Kanekoa scored 18 points and Dita Liepkalne 12 as the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team trounced San Jose State, 70-57, today in a Western Athletic Conference Tournament play-in game in Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nev.
UH (8-22 overall and 5-12 in WAC play) will face top seed Fresno State (21-8, 12-4) 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in a quarterfinal game. The semifinals are Friday with the championship Saturday. The tournament winner is granted an NCAA berth. San Jose State's season is done at 2-28 and 1-16 in the WAC.
The Rainbow Wahine broke away early in this game, using two 12-2 runs in the first half.
Liepkalne scored five points in UH's first run that turned a 9-9 game into a 21-11 lead.
After San Jose State closed to 27-22, UH went on another run behind Brenna Arbuckle and Liepkalne, both of whom scored four points each during the spree that enabled UH to take a 39-24 halftime lead.
Kanekoa connected on 6 of 8 field-goal attempts, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range.
Liepkalne hit 5 of 6 field-goal attempts.
Allie Patterson made 4 of 4 field-goal attempts and scored 10 for the Rainbow Wahine.
