Garbage crews sickened by chemicals in the trash
State and county officials have determined that two Kaua'i County refuse crews that became nauseous on their rounds last Thursday were sickened by chemicals in the trash.
One three-person crew was sickened by an acetone-based chemical, while another crew was made ill by a pesticide, the county reported yesterday.
The workers were not seriously affected, but were sent home to recuperate.
The amounts of chemicals were deemed to be small and the loads were deposited in the Kekaha Landfill, the county said.
