WASILLA, Alaska — The engagement is off for the teenage daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and the father of her baby.

Levi Johnston said yesterday that he and Bristol Palin mutually decided "awhile ago" to end their relationship. The 19-year-old Johnston would not elaborate.

Eighteen-year-old Bristol Palin said in a statement that she is "devastated."

The two are the parents of a boy named Tripp, who was born Dec. 27.

Sarah Palin revealed her daughter's pregnancy days after being named John McCain's running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

TENOR INSPIRED BY LATE PONTIFF

NEW YORK — Placido Domingo, who helped define classical crossover music, is clearly still intent on breaking boundaries and defying stereotypes.

On his new album, out this week, the legendary tenor pays homage to the man he considers "the most important pope in history," the late John Paul II. But Domingo, 68, celebrates him less as a religious icon than a creative, sensitive human being: The songs on "Amore Infinito" ("infinite love" in Italian) were inspired by poems that the man born Karol Wojtyla wrote before his tenure as pope.

"I am Catholic, but this album is not for Catholics only," says Domingo, sitting in an office at the Metropolitan Opera, where he'll be honored for 40 years of service at the Met's 125th anniversary gala Sunday.

In John Paul II, Domingo saw "a personality for the whole world. He decided to dedicate himself to the church, but he could have done anything."

BROWN PULLS OUT OF KIDS' CHOICE

LOS ANGELES — Chris Brown, who is facing felony charges for allegedly attacking his girlfriend, pop singer Rihanna, withdrew yesterday from Nickelodeon's hugely popular Kids' Choice Awards.

The pullout fuels an escalating public-relations fire around the 19-year-old singer, who has been a target of outrage since the release of court papers last week that said the R&B singer punched, bit and choked 21-year-old Rihanna after an exclusive pre-Grammys party Feb. 8.

The departure spared cable's Nickelodeon further embarrassment, as pressure had mounted from parents groups this week to have the singer removed from the list of nominees, which also included Rihanna.

Last week, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge postponed a scheduled arraignment for Brown's case until next month. The Virginia native, who is charged with assault and making criminal threats, faces a maximum sentence of nearly five years in prison if convicted.

MOORE, ADAMS WED IN GEORGIA

NEW YORK — Mandy Moore is a married woman.

Publicist Jillian Fowkes confirms the actress-singer and her fiance, rock musician Ryan Adams, quietly tied the knot Tuesday in Savannah, Ga. No further details were provided.

The 24-year-old Moore confirmed her engagement to Adams last month.

Moore started out as a squeaky-clean teen singer and later crossed into movies with featured roles in such films as "License to Wed," "A Walk to Remember," "Saved" and "American Dreamz."

Adams, who played in the band Whiskeytown during the 1990s before beginning his prolific solo career, is known for his song "New York, New York," which appeared on his album "Gold," released in 2001.
