Song Il Kook, one of Korea's top male K-drama celebrities, is scheduled to visit Honolulu next week, and his itinerary includes a March 21 concert and a March 22 meeting with fan club members.
His visit, sponsored by Beauty Touch Productions in coordination with the United Korean Association of Hawaii, is being put together in appreciation of all the hallyu (Korean wave) fans. This is the newlywed's first official visit to the state.
Song Il Kook (also known as Song Il Gook), was born on Oct. 1, 1971, to well-known actress Eul Don Kim. He became a top-tier celebrity in his own right after his successful role in "Emperor of the Sea" catapulted him to the main role in "Jumong," then "Lobbyist" and "Kingdom of the Wind," where he plays the grandson of Jumong.
His acting in movies has been limited to "The Art of Seduction" and "Red Eye."
Song has received many awards for his acting from MBC and KBS at the year-end drama and acting awards ceremonies.
Song enjoys swimming, skiing, mountain biking and golf. He mentioned some interest in possibly doing a triathlon in Hawai'i.
But next week he'll be meeting with fans. Members of Hawai'i's Gentle Song Il Kook Fan Club met with Song in Korea while on a hallyu tour several years ago and have since worked very hard raising money in hope of inviting Song to Hawai'i one day. Their dream is coming true next week. Song's fans from the Neighbor Islands, Seattle and even Ohio are coming to Honolulu to get their chance at a photo opportunity with their favorite star.
The Gentle Song Il Kook Fan Club donated the proceeds of their many fundraisers to become a major sponsor of the visit. Sunday's meeting at the Waikiki Resort Hotel is reserved for members only — and there is a long wait list already for fans who have signed up for membership because of Song's visit.
On March 21, Song will be part of the Saturday Night Countdown variety show at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, accompanied by fellow actor Ho Min Yeo and singers Hyun Jung Ho, Ko Hyun Wook and Park Sun Ju.
In addition, the three-hour show will include the United Korean Association of Hawaii's presentation of an award for Song that recognizes him as the Ambassador of Hallyu and another presentation from state Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona.
Tickets are only available through a promotion by Beauty Touch retail locations, which will offer one ticket for a $50 purchase. Since there are no assigned seats, it is very likely that fans will be waiting for hours before the event to get a chance to sit as close as possible and attempt to save seats for their friends.
