Hawaii drops first match in history against UC San Diego

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team lost its first match in history to UC San Diego last night, 34-32, 30-23, 25-30, 30-19, at La Jolla, Calif.

The No. 12 Warriors had won the first 39 meetings against the No. 8 Tritons.

UC San Diego improved to 9-10 overall and 5-9 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Hawai'i fell to 4-12 and 3-10.

Joshua Walker had 17 kills with 10 errors in 40 attempts for Hawai'i, which has dropped six of its last seven.

UC San Diego's Frank Fritsch had 33 kills as the Tritons hit .382 for the match.

The teams will play again today at 4 p.m. Hawai'i time.

DIVING



FRIESEN SWEEPS NCAA SPRINGBOARD QUALIFYING

Hawai'i junior Emma Friesen swept the springboard events at NCAA Zone E Qualifying, winning the 1-meter yesterday at Austin, Texas, after capturing 3-meter Thursday.

Friesen will defend her NCAA Championship on the 1-meter starting Thursday at College Station, Texas.

Yesterday, Friesen, a Canadian who has captured all three WAC 1-meter titles in her career, finished with a total of 591.40 points. UH freshman Daniella Nero was ninth with 488.50.

Douglas Cohen, also a freshman at UH, finished eighth in the men's 3-meter final with a score of 617.80.

Cohen and Nero will compete in the platform event today.


GOLF

'IOLANI'S CHAN LEADS HAWAI'I STROKE PLAY

'Iolani freshman Lorens Chan made the most of his day off from school to shoot a 6-under-par 66 yesterday and charge into first at the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Pearl Country Club.

Chan, 14, is 7-under at the halfway point, two shots ahead of former University of Hawai'i golfer Ryan Perez (68-139). The tournament record is 9-under.

First-round leader Jonathan Ota (70-140) is another shot back. Kamehameha sixth-grader Donny Hopoi made the cut with 151.

The final two rounds tee off from 11 a.m. this weekend, with the tournament expected to finish at around 5 p.m. tomorrow.


SOFTBALL

HAWAI'I-HILO SWEEPS BYU-HAWAI'I

Amber Waracka pitched a two-hitter as visiting Hawai'i-Hilo beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 3-0, in the first game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday.

Waracka walked one and struck out 12, and Aisha Sueda homered for Hilo.

In the second game, Sarah Weisskopf pitched a four-hitter in the Vulcans' 3-2 victory.

The Seasiders' Julianne Tialavea pitched a five-hitter and all three runs against her were unearned.

Hilo improved to 12-10 and 5-9; BYUH fell to 7-15 and 3-5.

HAWAI'I PACIFIC SWEEPS GRAND CANYON

Courtney Kessell pitched a four-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific beat Grand Canyon, 5-0, in the first game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday at HPU Windward field.

Kessell walked none and struck out six.

In the second game, Sherise Musquiz worked six innings and Ashley Valine pitched one as HPU beat Grand Canyon, 6-0.


BASEBALL

HPU TAKES PAIR FROM GRAND CANYON

Jacob Valentine batted 5 for 5 with two triples, five RBIs and four runs scored as Hawai'i Pacific beat Grand Canyon, 14-4, to sweep a doubleheader yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

Daniel Cox allowed one run in six innings for win, and Sean Winston went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Sea Warriors.

In the first game, Jonah Hobson batted 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and Valentine and Alex Agortsas drove in two runs apiece in HPU's 12-9 victory.

Both games were seven innings.

HPU improved to 18-4; Grand Canyon dropped to 9-14.
