"Over 3.5 million years ago a small flock of finches arrived on an isolated island group in the central Pacific Ocean. Through evolution, adaptive radiation and ecological opportunity they evolved into an array of birds with amazing bill forms, color and specialized feeding behaviors," says Jack Jeffrey.
Jeffrey, a wildlife photographer and biologist, first provides a lecture and slide show of avian natural history and ecology relating to species found in the island chain, with emphasis on the Big Island. The remaining program heads out to the Kipuka Puaulu section of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park presenting an opportunity to hear and see both native and introduced bird species.
"This kipuka (forest opening) provides a window into the past. It fosters many plants and insects, found few other places, as food resources for native birds," says Jeffrey.
Jeffrey has been observing, studying, and capturing images of Hawai'i's endemic species for more than 35 years; his images have won conservation awards from the National Sierra Club and Hawai'i Audubon Society, and have graced the covers and pages of magazines, text books, calendars, and cards.
The "Life is for the Birds" workshop is 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 22 at Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. $65. 967-8222, www.volcanoartcenter.org.
