UH baseball team beats Washington, 9-7, in 10 innings

 •  Portland pounds UH, ends Rainbows' 8-game win streak

After blowing a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, Hawai'i scored twice in the top of the 10th to fend off Washington, 9-7, today in the first game of the Rose City Invitational at PGE Park in Portland, Ore.

The Rainbows lost to Portland, 13-2, in their second game of the day.

In the UH 10th, Vinnie Catricala singled off third with one out and took second when Kevin Macdonald grounded out to short. Jeffrey Van Doornum singled to right-center to scored Catricala to put UH ahead, 8-7. On a 2-2 count, Van Doornum was caught leaning the wrong way, but still stole second. Geoff Brown was lifted for Andrew Kittredge with Landon Hernandez at the plate. Hernandez doubled to left-center to make it 9-7 before Shane Hoey struck out to end the inning.

The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the 10th. Julien Pollard and Brendan Gardner-Young each singled to put runners at first and second before Pierce Rankin flied out to left. Troy Scott grounded to short for a game-ending double play.

Sam Spangler (3-0) gave up a run in 1 2/3 innings for the Rainbows (11-6), who extended their win streak to eight.

Brown (1-2) gave up two runs in one innings for the Huskies (6-10), who have dropped four in a row.

The game was delay 25 minutes in the top of the ninth because of rain.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the second. With one out Jake Rife doubled to left-center and scored on Andy Bethel's single to center.

The Rainbows took the lead in the top of the third. With two outs, Greg Garcia singled to right and took third when Kolten Wong reached first safely on a fieliding error by second baseman Pierce Rankin. Vinnie Catricala's single to right tied the game at 1 and moved Wong to third. Kevin Macdonald doubled to left to score Wong to put UH ahead, 2-1, and send Catricala to third before Jeffrey Van Doornum grounded out to short to end the inning.

Washington tied it in the bottom of the third. With one out, Kyle Conley walked and took second on Brett Wilcox's single to right. Both advanced on a wild pitch before Ty Rasmussen walked to load the bases. Rife's sacrifice fly to left scored Conley and sent Wilcox to third, as Rasmussen held first. Bethel grounded out to third to end the inning.

The Rainbows regained the lead in the fourth. Matt Roquemore doubled with two outs and scored on Ryan Morford's single to left to put UH up, 3-2, before Garcia grounded out to third trying to bunt his way on.

The Huskies tied it at 3 in the bottom of the fourth when Rankin hit a solo home run to left with two outs.

The Rainbows scored four in the fifth to break the tie. With one out, Catricala singled and the left-handed Gomez was lifted for the right-handed Jacob Clem to face the right-handed hitting Macdonald. With Catricala running on the pitch, Macdonald singled to right to put runners at the corners. Catricala scored when Van Doornum reached first on a fielding error by third baseman Julien Pollard, as Macdonald stopped at second. The runners advanced when Landon Hernandez grounded out to second. A wild pitch scored Macdonald moved Van Doornum to second before Shane Hoey was hit by a pitch with UH ahead, 5-3. Clem was pulled for right-hander Forrest Snow, who walked Roquemore to load the bases. Morford walked to score Van Doornum to make it 6-3 and reload the bases. Garcia walked to reload the bases and bring home another run to make it 7-3. Wong struck out to end the inning.

Washington got one back in the fifth. Conley led off with a single and took third on Wilcox's single. Rasmussen struck out, but Rife grounded to third for a force at second that scored Conley to make it 7-4. Rife stole second, but Bethel grounded out to Kramer to end the inning.

The Huskies tied it in the bottom of the ninth. Brendan Gardner-Young led off with a double to right off Harrison Kuroda and took third on a balk before Rankin struck out. Troy Scott singled to left to score Gardner-Young to make it 7-5. Kuroda was pulled for the left-handed Sam Spangler to face the right-handed hitting Conley, who singled to left to put runners at first and second. Aaron Russell's RBI single pulled UW to 7-6 and sent Conley to third. Rife's RBI single tied the game at 7 and sent Russell to second.
