MAYS LANDING, N.J. — A Philadelphia Kixx soccer player has been charged with aggravated manslaughter after a fatal auto accident in southern New Jersey.
Police say Matthew Maher was driving on the Atlantic City Expressway in Hamilton Township early on March 7 when his SUV crashed into a minivan carrying Philadelphia resident Hort Kap. The 55-year-old Kap was pronounced dead at the scene.
Maher was ticketed for driving while intoxicated after the accident. He appeared in court Friday in Cape May County.
The 24-year-old Maher, of Cape May, plays for the Kixx in the National Indoor Soccer League. The team's Web site says he has appeared in five games this season.
John Tumelty, an attorney representing Maher, didn't return a phone message Saturday.
