The voyaging canoe Hokulea left Palmyra Atoll this afternoon for its return trip to Honolulu.

The 1,000-mile journey is expected to take about nine days.

The canoe is being sailed by a new crew on its trip home, as the Polynesian Voyaging Society hopes to train a new generation of non-instrument navigators ahead of a planned 2012 trip around the world.
