Oregon State stops baseball Rainbows, 8-4

Jorge Reyes struck out 11 in seven innings to help Oregon State beat Hawai'i, 8-4, today at Goss Stadium in Corvalils, Ore.

Reyes (3-1) gave up three runs four hits and three walks for the Beavers (13-5).

Harrison Kuroda (3-1) allowed four runs, five hits and a walk with one strikeout in two-plus innings for UH (13-8).

The Rainbows took a 1-0 lead in the second on a one out, solo home run to left-center by Landon Hernandez.

The Beavers tied it in the bottom of the second. Logan Boyd led off with a single to right and took third on Ryan Ortiz's double to left. After Brett Casey popped out to short, Boyd scored on Logan Lotti's sacrifice fly to center.

The Beavers batted around to score three in the third. John Tommasini led off with a single to center, John Wallace walked and Joey Wong loaded the bases with a bunt single to third. Adalberto Santos grounded a single up the middle to drive in two and moved Wong to second. Kuroda was replaced by Ryan Davis. Boyd's sacrifice moved the runners to second and third. Ortiz walked to load the bases. After striking out Casey, Davis walked Lotti to force home another run to make it 4-1 before Rob Folsom flied out to right to end the inning.

Hawai'i closed to 4-3 in the in the fourth. With one out, Vinnie Catricala singled to center and Kevin Macdonald walked. Hernandez's ground single to left scored Catricala to pull UH to 4-2 and sent Macdonald to second. Jeffrey Van Doornum singled to right to load the bases. Christian Johnson struck out, but Sean Montplaisir walked to force home a run to make it 4-3. But on a pitch that got away from the catcher, Hernandez was out at home trying to score from third to end the inning.

The Beavers made it 5-3 in the sixth. Lotti doubled to right and one out later, scored on Tommasini's single to left. Tommasini was thrown out at second trying to extend his single to end the inning.

Oregon State added two in the seventh. John Wallace led off with a single to right and Joey Wong was hit by a pitch. Both advanced on Santos' sacrifice.

Davis was replaced on the mound by Sam Spangler to face pinch hitter Blake Gibbs, whose RBI single to right moved Wong to third. Ortiz's sacrifice fly to center made it 7-3.

With two outs in the top of the eighth, Catricala hit a solo home run off Kraig Sitton to pull UH to 7-4.

The Beavers added a run in the eighth. Lotti reached on a two-base error by right fielder Johnson. Pinch runner Kyle Beverley took third on a passed ball and scored on Tommasini's single to center to make it 8-4.
