Fire department credits citizens for helping contain Nuuanu house fire

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Fire Department today credited quick actions from two citizens in helping contain a fire that broke out in a Nuuanu home yesterday.

The fire started in a linen closet at a home at 44 Mamalahoa Place.

A woman in the house placed an initial call for help — but to a Hawaiian Telcom operator, who routed the call to 911.

Meanwhile, a neighbor entered the home with a garden hose and helped control the blaze until firefighters arrived.

The fire caused an estimated $6,000 in damages.

The fire department reminds the public to call 911 to report any emergency. HFD also urges use of a landline, if possible, when calling 911. That makes it easier for responding units to determine where the call is coming from.
