More than 45 advocates for the needy gathered at the state Capitol this morning to call for an end to cuts to social services.

The advocates taped a list of concerns and possible solutions to the doors of the governor's and lieutenant governor's offices. They also visited legislators' offices.

The governor and lieutenant governor were in meetings and could not come out to meet the advocates, their staff said.

Advocates said the social service safety net for the poor, mentally ill, disabled and others is being dismantled by deep cuts because of the fiscal crisis.

They said such services should be considered a priority.

"We need to keep in mind that even though these are tough times that we really need to protect the most vulnerable in the community," said Howard Garval, president and CEO of Child & Family Service.
