Brigham Young-Hawai'i forward Lucas Alves, who led the Seasiders to the NCAA II men's basketball region finals, was named Daktronics Division II National Player of the Year.

Alves, BYUH's first national player of the year, also was named to the Division II All-American first team on Monday. The team is voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Alves, a 6-foot-9 forward from Casa Branca, Brazil, led the Seasiders to a school-best 27-2 record this season. He averaged 19.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, shooting 52.7 percent from the field while playing just 27 minutes per game. He blocked 40 shots during the year and made 25 3-pointers.

BYUH lost to Cal Poly Pomona, 59-58, in the NCAA II West Regional final on March 18.

In just three seasons of play at BYU–Hawaii, Alves has already scored over 1,500 points and grabbed over 600 rebounds in his career.

Alves earlier was named as the Daktronics NCAA II West Region Player of the Year and to the West Region First-Team. He received similar honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He was also named to the West Regional All-Academic First Team for the second consecutive season.

Also selected to the Division II All-American team were forward Laurence Ekperigin of LeMoyne, forward LaVontay Ferguson of Wisconsin-Parkside, forward Josh Bostic of Findlay and center Nick Kohs of Christian Brothers.
