Rainbows hold off No. 18 Coastal Carolina, 4-3, to take series

Freshman Connor Little pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and freshman Kolten Wong drilled his fifth homer of the season and Hawai'i beat No. 18 Coastal Carolina, 4-3, today to take the series, 3-1, before 1,722 at Les Murakami Stadium.
In his second career start, Little (2-0) gave up two runs and six hits with three strikeouts for the Rainbows (16-9).
Josh Slaats gave up a run in 2 1/3 innings for his second save.
Austin Fleet (3-2) allowed four runs, six hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings for the Chanticleers (19-7).
The Chanticleers jumped on Little in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Scott Woodward led off with a soft single to left and was caught stealing second. Rico Noel lined a single to left, stole second, stole third and scored on Tyler Bortnick's single to left.
Hawai'i responded quickly with a three-run first against Fleet. Greg Garcia walked on four pitches to start the inning, took second when Matt Roquemore bounced out to the pitcher went to third when Vinnie Catricala grounded out to shortstop and scored on Kevin Macdonald's double to left. Kolten Wong ripped a two-run home run to right-center to make it 3-0. It was his team-leading fifth of the season.
David Anderson homered to right — his eighth of the season and the first of the series for the Chanticleers — to cut the deficit to 3-2 witn one out in the fourth.
The Rainbows added a run in the sixth. Catricala led off by walking on four pitches, only to get picked off before Macdonald walked. Fleet was pulled for the left-handed Keith Hessler to face the left-handed hitting Wong, who grounded to second and reached on a force at second. Wong went to third on Hernandez's single down the right-field line. Jeffrey Van Doornum grounded a single up the middle to score Wong to make it 4-2 and move Hernandez to second before Ryan Morford grounded to short for a force at second.
In the top of the ninth, Tyler Bortnick homered to start the ninth against Slaats to pull the Chanticleers to 4-3. Anderson singled off shortstop Greg Garcia's glove. Pinch hitter Adam Rice sacrificed Anderson to second. Slaats then struck out Tommy Winegardner. Pinch hitter Chance Gilmore struck out to end the game.
