Williams sisters cruise in Sony

Advertiser News Services

On a sunny day in South Florida, the future of American women's tennis seldom looked so gloomy.

The present is in good hands thanks to Serena and Venus Williams, but they were the lone U.S. females among the 32 players reaching the third round at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla.

Top-ranked Serena won, 6-2, 6-3, against 19-year-old Californian Alexa Glatch, who conceded her generation has yet to produce a player worthy of succeeding the Williams sisters.

"There is a gap there right now," Glatch said. "You can't deny that. It's very tough out here."

No. 5-seeded Venus Williams also won her opener, beating Shahar Peer, 6-3, 6-3. Seeded players had first-round byes.

On the men's side, top-ranked Rafael Nadal opened a bid for his first Key Biscayne title by beating Teimuraz Gabashvili, 6-2, 6-2.

FIGURE SKATING

KIM WINS WORLDS

Kim Yu-na has a world title to go with her royal nickname.

Kim, called "Queen Yu-na" by her adoring fans in South Korea, won the women's title at the World Figure Skating Championships last night in Los Angeles.

After her huge lead in the short program, this was more coronation than competition. She finished with 207.71 total points, more than 16 points ahead of Canada's Joannie Rochette, who was followed by Miki Ando and Mao Asada.

Rachael Flatt finished fifth and Alissa Czisny was 11th, meaning the U.S. can send only two women to the Vancouver Olympics.

HORSE RACING

ALYSHEBA DIES

Alysheba, winner of the 1987 Kentucky Derby and Preakness and 1988 Horse of the Year, has died. The champion stallion was 25.

Dubbed "America's Horse" by racing fans, Alysheba was euthanized Friday night following a fall in his stall at the Kentucky Horse Park's Hall of Champions in Lexington, Ky., where he was buried yesterday.

SIGHTS SET ON DERBY

Once a Kentucky Derby afterthought, Quality Road might be the one to beat in the Run for the Roses.

Quality Road held off previously unbeaten Dunkirk in the stretch yesterday to win the Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., giving the colt his second graded stakes win in as many starts.

Next up is the Kentucky Derby May 2.

SOCCER

U.S. MEN RALLY, 2-2

Jozy Altidore started the comeback in the 77th minute and Frankie Hejduk scored the tying goal in the 88th as the United States rallied for a 2-2 draw with host El Salvador in a World Cup qualifier last night at San Salvador.

Ranked 106th in the world, El Salvador built a 2-0 lead against the No. 17 Americans with goals in the 15th minute and 72nd.

Kamehameha alum Brian Ching had a chance to win it for the United States seven minutes into injury time but was stopped on an open bicycle kick by Mardoqueo Henriquez.
