WAIPI'O — Six hours later, Pearl City remained undefeated.

The Chargers swept a baseball doubleheader yesterday from rival 'Aiea in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Western Division.

Pearl City won the first game, 15-1, had a two-hour break, then returned to the field for a 10-2 win at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

With sunlight starting to fade, the Chargers improved to 8-0, while Na Ali'i dropped to 4-4.

"We never took 'Aiea lightly and tried our best," said Pearl City's Jordan Oshiro, who went 4 for 4 in the second game to finish 6 for 8 on the day. "We knew they're a good team."

The new OIA scheduling format this season has teams playing doubleheaders on Saturdays, with a short break in between the games. Yesterday's game started at noon, but the second game didn't begin until 4 to accommodate OC-16's live televised broadcast.

No big deal for the Chargers, who ate lunch and rested during the extended break.

"It's been going four to five hours," Pearl City coach Gary Nakamoto said of this season's doubleheaders. "Today was a little longer."

Pearl City's Bryson Namba hit a two-run homer in each game.

Pearl City right-hander Kahana Neal pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts. He retired the first 12 batters, and credited Carlton Tanabe, who caught both games.

"It helps a lot," Neal said. "He calls a really good game."

Pearl City scored two runs in the bottom of the first on Kyle Kobayashi's RBI double to center and Tanabe's sacrifice fly to right.

The Chargers extended the lead to 5-0 in the second after Oshiro scored on Kobayashi's single and Namba's two-run homer that arched over the left-field fence.

Pearl City scored three runs in the third to make it 8-0 before 'Aiea finally broke up Neal's perfect game in the fifth.

Jacob Arakawa was hit by a Neal pitch to lead off the top of the fifth. Kainoa Asing-Ka'ahanui, who reached on a fielder's choice, eventually scored on a throwing error to make it 8-1.

Oshiro scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to make it 9-1 and Tanabe's sacrifice fly that scored Bronson Oda extended the lead to 10-1.

"We hit the ball good," Nakamoto said. " 'Aiea today didn't hit well. Our pitchers did a good job and the hitters put the ball in play."

In the first game, Pearl City's Jordan Schweitzer, Royce Murai and Isaac Shim combined on a two-hitter. Oda drove in three runs for the Chargers.
