HONOLULU
Registrations for AIDS Walk may exceed last year's total

Early registrations for the 18th annual Honolulu AIDS Walk on April 19 are on pace to surpass last year's record turnout of 3,200 walkers, organizers say.

Last year at this time, 70 teams and 450 walkers had signed up for the walk. But this year, 100 teams and 530 walkers already have registered with more expected in the next few weeks, said spokeswoman Melanie Moore.

The event features a three-mile course around Kapiolani Park beginning at 9 a.m., followed by entertainment, a health fair, inflatable bouncers and food booths. Last year's walk raised more than $200,000 for the Life Foundation and hopes to contribute more than $250,000 this year to the organization, which provides free HIV testing and services for people living with HIV/AIDS. An estimated 3,000 people live with HIV or AIDS in the Islands.

On Thursday, Lululemon Athletica at Ala Moana Center will host a registration table from 3 p.m. until closing. For all of April, Lululemon Athletica also will have a window display highlighting the walk and the Life Foundation's free HIV testing.
