MLB: Pima County floats spring training idea in Tucson
Associated Press
TUCSON, Ariz. — Pima County is attempting to run the bases on spring training baseball.
The latest plan calls for a $125 million facility to be built in Marana and used by three Major League Baseball teams.
The Tucson area is already in danger of losing the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies to Maricopa County.
The nonprofit Pima County Sports and Tourism Authority issued the plan after Diamondbacks' management asked for proposals.
The Diamondbacks contract with Pima County for use of Tucson Electric Park runs through 2012 and the Rockies pact with Tucson to use Hi Corbett Field expires in 2011.
A recent study showed that losing spring training teams in Pima County would cost about $30 million annually to the local economy.
