Firefighters airlift ailing hiker out of Hanakapi'ai Valley
LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A 28-year-old visitor from Maui who was ill and unable to hike out of Hanakapi'ai Valley on his own was airlifted out Sunday morning, the Kaua'i Fire Department said.
The man was listed in stable condition at Mahelona Medical Center.
The man and his girlfriend had been camping in Kalalau Valley and were on their way out when the man became ill after drinking stream water. The couple spent the night in Hanakapi'ai Valley.
The next morning, the woman hiked out and called police dispatch at around 8:03 a.m. and reported that the man was sick and needed assistance getting out of the valley.
The fire department's Air-1 helicopter, a rescue specialist from the Lihu'e fire station, and a firefighter from the Hanalei station responded to the call.
They picked up the man at around 9:15 am at the landing zone in Hanakapi'ai Valley and brought him to Princeville Airport. From there, paramedics picked him up and took him to Mahelona Medical Center.
