Expand your musical horizons with a concert of Javanese and Balinese gamelan music, 7:30 tonight at the University of Hawai'i Music Department's Barbara Smith Amphitheater.
Javanese gamelan is a large ensemble consisting of an array of bronze instruments, drums, strings and flute. Associated with the royal courts and the villages of Central Java, gamelan music is used for ceremonies and celebrations, to accompany dance and puppet theater, and for listening pleasure. The concert features the UH Gamelan Ensemble, the longest continuously active gamelan ensemble in the nation. The event is presented by the UHM Music Department in cooperation with the Hawaii Gamelan Society. Admission is $12 at the door, $8 for students and seniors.
